IBCHE - International Day

Thinking about taking a vacation? How about going around the world in just one night? Here’s some helpful information for those of you who would like to participate in International Day.

How do I prepare a display?

  1. Get a science fair display board from your local office supply or craft store. This provides lots of room for visual displays like maps, travel photos, facts about population, industry, famous nationals, etc. Consider this a giant size Lap Book!
  2. There will also be some table space for food samples, examples of national art, works of literature from your country, etc.
  3. Make some kind of “stamp” or sticker to mark the passports of visitors to our display. This needs to be about 1” in size and can be a pre-made stamp, a carved potato stamp, a flag sticker, or some other creative design.
  4. Feel free to dress in national costume or representative attire. Again, be creative. Take cues from your library books and see what you can come up with!

Where do I start finding information?

At your local library! You should be able to find books in the juvenile non-fiction section on most countries. These will be great sources of information, pictures, etc. The internet will also give you links to your country.

What kind of information should I be looking for?

Put together a display about your country on a science fair backdrop. Suggestions of things to include:

  • maps history
  • travel photos costumes
  • food art/industry
  • famous nationals

Questions to ask yourself:

What is the history, geography, and traditions of your country? What foods do they eat? What continent do they belong to? What kind of currency do they use? What is their chief industry? Do they have any interesting lore? What is the population? Where does the church stand in this country?

How do I expand my study with my children?

  • Choose some literature – works of fiction or picture books – that tell stories set in your country or that reveal through the story the traditions of your country.
  • Find out if your country has an Embassy or Consulate in Washington DC and visit it with your kids.
Get a cookbook (check at your library!) with recipes from your country and have a national dinner together where all the food comes from your country.
  • Find out about and contact a missionary currently living or working in that country.
  • Learn a few words of another language. Again, your library probably has language tapes you can check out.

Why should I bother?

Because it’s a great learning experience and a lot of fun for your whole family. And after all, we are ALL God’s children.
